Another single-page experiment/practise with the new HTML5 semantics and a little bit of CSS3. Best viewed in Firefox, Chrome, Safari & Opera. Tested only in the non-standard compliant browser Internet Explorer 8 and looks and behaves pretty much how it should be (except for the CSS3 tricks).

How I Work

Listed below are the 5 stages of my web design/development process. Each stage is important and must be signed off before the next stage can begin. As a client, you'll have the ability to follow and give feedback on the websites progress in a specially developed project area on my web server.

  1. Stage 1: Questionnaire & proposal

In order to create an eye–catching, professional and productive website, it’s necessary that I know what your preferences are in regards to design, which elements are required, what your website’s purpose is and what your core business is about. This is the purpose of the questionnaire and it’s of great importance that it’s filled in as extensively as possible so that the objectives and requirements of the project are clear to me. Based on your input, it’s likely that I will have additional questions, but these we will discuss as soon as I've read through the details of your project. Once the ins and outs of the project have been established, I'll create a web design proposal within it a scope of the entire website project, the timeline, the costs and terms and conditions. Before I can begin with the next stage, a down payment of 30% is required.

  2. Stage 2: Flowchart

The first thing we want to be sure about is that your website visitors will navigate through your website content with ease. In other words, we want the navigation flow to be easy, logical and as seamless as possible. To visualize this process, I'll create a flowchart that shows the linking, interchange and flow of information between the web pages that are to be connected.

  3. Stage 3: Wireframes

Wireframes (sketches) are basic illustrations of the structure and components of a web page. They indicate where which elements (logo, navigation menu, text, call-to-actions, images and/or video, forms, etc.) will be placed on each webpage. It's at the wireframe stage where we shift and move with these elements and make the final decision. Editing the layout of a wireframe is much less time consuming than that of a design. Therefore, when and if layout changes are required once the building has begun or when a complex design has already been formed, extra charges will occur.

  4. Stage 4: Design

Once the wireframes are in place I will start creating the base designs. At this point it's already clear which type of design it's going to be: which images & colours will be used and what kind of typography is required, but I will create 2 possible versions of how your website could look.

  5. Stage 5: Development

Once a design has been approved, I will continue on to the development stage. I will develop the website with valid (X)HTML and CSS according to the guidelines set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), and the mark-up (HTML code) will be clean and search engine friendly. During the development, progress tests for both Windows and Macintosh will be made frequently in the most common browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera.

About Me

Ralph Echter is my name and I'm originally from Holland but moved mid 2008 with my girlfriend and our son to Koskinou, a picturesque village on the beautiful & sunny island Rhodes (Greece).

As a self-taught web designer/developer, starting out professionally in 2008, I specialize in designing websites aided by an in-depth knowledge of (X)HTML, CSS & W3C Standards. I keep my knowledge up-to-date by reading as many articles as I can from web magazines/sites like Smashing Magazine, A List Apart, CSS-tricks & 24ways to name a few. I also pay close attention to what web guru's such as Eric Meyer, Jeffrey Zeldman, Dan Cederholm, Jacob Nielsen & Nicole Sullivan have to say on their personal blogs and/or in their books about semantic mark-up, web standards, accessibility & usability.
